Beyond the Post-it Note: How Lego Unlocks Every Voice in the Room
Think about your last team meeting. Who did most of the talking? In nearly every group, a familiar pattern repeats: two or three confident voices shape the conversation while everyone else nods, half-agrees, or quietly disengages.
It’s not that the quiet people have nothing to offer — often they have the most. The format just never gives them a way in. Lego Serious Play (LSP) is designed to fix exactly that.
What is Lego® Serious Play®?
LSP is a facilitated method where people think with their hands. Building models in Lego bricks to represent ideas, challenges, strategies or relationships, then sharing the story behind what they built. It sounds playful, and it is. But behind the play is a serious, well-researched process for surfacing thinking that words alone tend to leave buried.
Why it includes everyone
- Everyone builds, so everyone speaks. The core rule is simple: each person builds, then each person shares their model. Participation isn’t optional or dominated — it’s structured in. The quietest person in the room gets the same airtime as the loudest.
- The model does the talking. People who find it hard to speak up in open discussion find it far easier to explain a thing they’ve made. The brick carries the idea, which takes the social pressure off the speaker.
- It levels the hierarchy. When the MD and the newest hire are both building and sharing, status takes a back seat. Ideas get judged on merit, not on who said them.
- It slows the fast thinkers down. Building takes a few minutes, which gives reflective thinkers time to form their view — instead of the discussion being won by whoever talks first.
It activates creativity, not just consensus
There’s good cognitive science behind the play. Working with your hands engages different parts of your thinking and loosens the rehearsed, on-message answers people usually give. Metaphor unlocks honesty — it’s often easier to build “what’s really getting in our way” than to say it out loud in a meeting. The result is richer, more candid material to work with: real challenges, real ideas, real alignment.
Where SMEs use it
LSP shines whenever you need the whole team genuinely engaged: defining your mission, vision and values so they actually mean something; getting aligned on strategy or a big change; working through a thorny team challenge; or simply building understanding across people who don’t usually see each other’s world. One half-day often achieves what months of circular meetings couldn’t — because for once, everyone was actually in the conversation.
